The Other Side of Fear

It continues to amaze me when I connect with people about health and fitness. We really are no different than the mainstream…all of us know what to do. So why don’t we do it? What is holding us back?

I took the opportunity to poll people on my Facebook page about what is “the” excuse that keeps them from choosing to be healthy. The bulk of the responses looked like this:

–       I’m too tired…

–       I like food too much…

–       I don’t have motivation…

–       I don’t have time…

–       It’s too expensive…

To me these are all summed up in one root, fear.

In total, there were 30 written responses. What is interesting is that 830 people viewed the question so 800 didn’t respond. This got me thinking; maybe the real thing that holds us back has to do with fear. Most didn’t even want to address the issue with an answer.

All of the excuses may be real, but maybe the bigger statement is that we don’t want to deal with the hassle of being healthy. It’s just easier to ignore or avoid it. It ultimately boils down to what we see as important. We are afraid of what real change may mean.

This translates into all we do though, doesn’t it? We see issues that others say are important, we know they probably are important, but it’s just easier to ignore them rather than deal with them and possibly make changes. We settle with mediocrity because at least it’s better than taking a risk and failing, right?

Change can be hard, it can hurt; routines take a long time to develop and there is a level of comfort in them. Fear rears its head whenever we see anything that may challenge our routine. At some point though, we must be convinced that life on the other side of the fear is better.

I love this verse, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love,” 1 John 4:18. This reminds me that love comes first; God’s love for me, my love for myself and others. But it also tells me that love trumps the fear; fear of failure, fear of change, fear of trying one more time.

God has something better for us on the other side of the fear but the only way to step forward is to be overwhelmed by His love. Choose to not be overcome by fear but instead boldly walk into your healthy life covered by His love today.
