I Should…

A lot of times in life there seems to be an emphasis on things we “shouldn’t” do. I know that as I’ve tried to get healthier, I think in those terms often. I shouldn’t eat sugar. I shouldn’t over-consume carbs.

While those things are true, I have had more success when I focus on things I “should” do instead. It’s like I’m playing to win, rather than playing not to lose. The following three “should’s” have really helped me:

-I should drink my water! I should drink half of my body weight (in ounces) every day. Having a plan really helps! Having my water cold and measured out ahead of time really keeps me on track!

-I should exercise! There are a couple tips that I’ll share that have helped me stay consistent. First, most ofthe exercise I do are things I enjoy. I definitely add in things I don’t like because I know I need work there, but I don’t emphasize those things. Second, I make sure I do a mix of cardio, strength, and mobility to stay balanced. Lastly, I work out in groups. Community has really helped me. When I work out with others, I find that I do more and it feels like less!

-I should eat vegetables! Veggies have lots of vitamins, minerals, and fiber! They also help keep me full! I have a couple tips that have helped me if you’re struggling to get in your vegetable servings. First, try cooking them different ways. I don’t like boiled cauliflower. However, I really like it if it is roasted in the oven. I also have been buying mashed frozen cauliflower and using it for shepherd’s pie. Another trick is to cut your veggies into different size or shape. Cutting them smaller helps me to hide them in different dishes. At my house, we have just discovered the spiralizer…love it! We spiralize zucchini, and then use it in place of spaghetti noodles. We don’t even cook them. We just add hot spaghetti sauce over the top of the zucchini. I like it a lot more than spaghetti squash!

I hope these “should’s” help you like they do me! They are good goals! Play to win instead of playing not to lose!
